Insomnia

It is normal for almost everyone to have trouble getting sleep at night occasionally.

So when should I consider I have an issue with sleeping?

​

Firstly, if you feel, it's an issue that needs dealing with. But, you could consider it more serious if trouble with sleep happens several times per week and persists for a month or longer.

 

Pay attention to whether and how sleep affects your everyday life:

  • Are you low energy and your days are often “foggy”, just trying to get through the day?

  • Are you having trouble making decisions?

  • Is your mood changing?

  • Are you performing well at work?

  • Are you feeling dread before going to sleep?

Why does insomnia start and why does it keep happening?

​

There are many reasons for this! You might have a genetic tendency to it, or it might be caused by a bigger incident in life, like a breakup or stressful project. Sometimes sleeping issues can be caused by other underlying issue like pain, anxiety, and PTSD. Lifestyle or sleeping environment can also be a factor.

The reason, why trouble with sleeping keeps happening even though we are tired and sleepy from previous nights, is described in the diagram below. We start fighting with it and building frustration on it, which causes more arousal and more sleeping difficulties.
